The World Trade Organization Should Be Reformed, Says Nucor

Steel Industry

The Section 232 restrictions on steel imports were recently found to be in violation of the United States' WTO commitments, and Nucor firmly supports the American government's opposition to this decision. In order to safeguard American national security, Section 232 steel regulations were put into place. These regulations are now strengthening the American steel supply chain, which had been weakened for years by global overcapacity and unfair trade.

The United States administration has long acknowledged that the WTO dispute settlement mechanism frequently goes too far in its conclusions and violates American sovereignty. The WTO system has made it possible for non-market economies like China and other nations to take advantage of the global trading system at the expense of producers that rely on the free market. The global trading system needs to be thoroughly rethought in order to be built on fair trade and ecologically responsible manufacturing practices.

"The WTO's most recent decision is another another illustration of overreach and further erodes the reliability of its dispute resolution process. It's past time to fix this flawed system, "said Nucor Corporation's chair, president, and chief executive officer, Leon Topalian.
